This procedure is generally used to treat cancer pain, pain from failed back surgeries, or where high doses of opioid and/or morphine is required. A pump, which is surgically placed under the skin of the abdomen, delivers medicine through a catheter to the cerebrospinal fluid in the patient’s spinal code. This facilitates delivery of a more directed dose of medication compared to oral medicines. The amount, duration and frequency of the medicines released can be programmed depending on patient’s changing needs, and can be refilled by way of an injection through a patient’s skin.
